Once every 5 Years our leadership meets to discuss changes to better our Union. This year over 1,000 representatives of all US and Canadian Locals were present. The Union Sportsman Alliance President spoke about our Brothers/Sisters donating time to help vitalize our Nations parks and recreational areas. We we're surprised when no other than Jeff Burgin BA from Chattanooga was selected as Conservation Steward of the Year. Jeff Thanked all of the Chattanooga SMART Army Members for making this possible if not for the Solidarity and Professionalism these projects could not have been completed. This was a Very Proud Day for Local 5. Thanks to the Brothers/Sister of the Fightin Fifth SMART Army.

Throughout the 2017 year Sheet Metal Workers Local #5 are very proud to have assisted our Community in many ways.

SMART ARMY On September 21st Sheet Metal Workers Local #5 we're notified that a Chattanooga Veteran and his Family had been left with an exposed metal roof by a shoddy Contractor named Massaw Roofing. Army Veteran Kerry Hinton had paid this Contractor to demo the existing asphalt shingled roof and replace it with sheet metal. During this process the Owner/Operator of Massaw Roofing was arrested and reportedly put in Jail. Leaving Kerry along with his Wife and Kids with the mess. Volunteers from Sheet Metal Workers #5 SMART ARMY along with help from Union Contractor Chase Plumbing and Mechanical Inc. went to work donating time and materials to help this Family in need. Finishing this project on September 26th The Hinton Family Thanked our Union Graciously. Special Thanks to Brothers Jacob Wheeler, George Painter, Jordan Burgin, Jason Andrews, John Kirk and Jeff Burgin. Sheet Metal Workers #5 In Unity With Our Community

I am Peter Policastro, I’d like to introduce myself as the newly appointed Organizer for SMART local 5. I am pleased to accept this position as the need for workforce and available job opportunities has grown rapidly throughout our area.

For the last five years I have been a Journeyperson working in North Carolina building trades. As a member I believe in being involved and putting our union to work for everyone in search of better wages, benefits and conditions.

As Organizer I look forward to working with our Officers, Members and Contractors to grow our local.

Here’s Unity.
On April 7th The SMART Army conference call asked for help making the metal strips on respirators. You may have heard sewing groups around the Country are making masks for our first responders and Medical professionals to assist during this pandemic. Local 5 jumped into action. We immediately called to locate aluminum sheeting. Wayne Grimes of Metal Supermarkets Knoxville learned of our efforts and donated the material needed. The very next day we received 15 orders from individuals looking for help with these strips.

North Carolina Apprentice Brother Irving Gusman entered the SMOHIT art contest and won first place. Our Brother was given recognition for his work in the Journal and as a prize Local #5 was given free shirts and hats. Great work Brother! Union Proud!
