2017 Legislative Conference

Building Trades Legislative Conference April 2nd-5th. Brother Brent Booker opened the Conference with welcoming remarks after the posting of the colors pledge was given. Invocation by Reverend Evelio Manjvar was given. Keynote speaker President Sean McGarvey followed by Nicholas Akins (AEP), Representative Tim Murphy, Maria Korsnick (NEI), Senator Charles Schumer, and Ryan Zinke Department of the Interior. Many great Work Shops followed. On the following day Speakers/Representatives Tim Ryan, Linda Sanchez, Cedric Richmond, Pete King and Dan Donovan. Throughout the 2017 year Sheet Metal Workers Local #5 are very proud to have assisted our Community in many ways.

SMART ARMY On September 21st Sheet Metal Workers Local #5 we're notified that a Chattanooga Veteran and his Family had been left with an exposed metal roof by a shoddy Contractor named Massaw Roofing. Army Veteran Kerry Hinton had paid this Contractor to demo the existing asphalt shingled roof and replace it with sheet metal. During this process the Owner/Operator of Massaw Roofing was arrested and reportedly put in Jail. Leaving Kerry along with his Wife and Kids with the mess. Volunteers from Sheet Metal Workers #5 SMART ARMY along with help from Union Contractor Chase Plumbing and Mechanical Inc. went to work donating time and materials to help this Family in need. Finishing this project on September 26th The Hinton Family Thanked our Union Graciously. North Carolina Apprentice Brother Irving Gusman entered the SMOHIT art contest and won first place. Our Brother was given recognition for his work in the Journal and as a prize Local #5 was given free shirts and hats. Great work Brother! Union Proud!

Last week, the Bureau of Labor Statistics released data on changes in union membership from 2016 to 2017. It was good news for workers, as the total number of union members grew by 262,000 in 2017. Three-fourths of these gains (198,000) were among workers aged 34 and under, who account for less than 40 percent of total employment.
